Gonna catch me a big one up top end

The Roberts family fishing exploits are legend. It's up there with boating exploits. Even with renowned fishing friend likes Billy John's we continue to be the widiculed around many a ex Rhodie Braai. There have been exceptions. My humungous Bream caught on Ath Squires farm. I think lottie has shown glimpses of promise. Alas the rest have been woeful.
Rejoice, this is about to change.
Being the kinda of guy that sacrfices all for his mates. I have to join Dave Hill up on the top end. For the uninformed the top end is right on the top of Stralia. Even north of kakadu i tell you. Also for the uniformed Dave Hill is  son of Basil Hill. A true Rhodesian/Zimbabwean fishing legend. He was, like the Jamie Oliver of Fishing. Had is own TV show and fishing shop in the centre of town. Where the hapless Roberts 'bloody' kids would press there snout against the shop window. Ogilling the huge tiger fish and the lures and other such paraphernalia that would/could transform our fishing reputation. Alas our two and half cents pocket money could only have bought half a tin of worms. So while the Roberts plowed aimlessly up and down a pool. The hills were out there fishing. Legend has it that if there was a bucket of water in first street (Salisbury) Basil would catch a fish. And when the Hill juniors went fishing they'd get abig Klup if they didn't catch. Need i say more. You starting to get the picture here. Success is beckoning. He has the talent. Experience. And while we could claim non of those attributes, most of the blame for our success or lack there of went on poor equipment. This can no longer be an excuse. I've left my El cheapo Aldi rod at home. And know doubt will have a fully baited you bueat rod veritably twitching to be cast into the waiting jaws of a big one.
So what's the catch of choice up on the Cobourg peninsula? The go to fish that's feed and clothed the fathers of this land fora millenia. Well maybe not clothed. That only happened, the clothing,  when those dasterderly invaders came and brought there grog.
No tiger fish here. Barramundi it is. can be a monsters. We're talking 50kg plus. Quick as. Sneaky. Which is wise if you've gotta 5 mtr saltie on your tale. That's why you get 5 mtre salties up there in the first place. Also accounts for the frequent disappearance of said fathers. What would you chase. Sneaky barramundi or! !
So i must thank my long suffering wife. For the the trip if a life time. Well since the last trip of a life time. What a wonderful birthday present (and fathers day). And as i say just here supporting my mates. It's the Ozzie way.
Keep you posted on developments.

The birthday card. Davo (known as Krokit) is the one in the dark glasses....

  1. I also caught a 1pound bream and a Bass of similar size. Monsters. However, I was held back by impatient siblings and some bad worms.
